Welcome
The Mid West Region of Western Australia is a sparsely populated region extending from the west coast about 200 kilometres (120 miles) north and south of the administrative centre of Geraldton and inland 450 kilometres (280 miles).
The Midwest WA Heritage website has been developed to shed light on some of the stories of community members who make up this region. Shires of The City of Geraldton and the Shires of Carnamah, Chapman Valley, Coorow, Cue, Dandaragan, Greenough, Irwin, Meekatharra, Mingenew, Morawa, Mount Magnet, Mullewa, Murchison, Northampton, Perenjori, Sandstone, Three Springs, Wiluna and Yalgoo are located within the Mid West Region.
This site contains a searchable database of burials and cremations at Cemeteries in the Mid West Region that have occurred since its early beginnings and a database of British and Colonial Convicts who found their way into the District of Victoria and contributed to its development.
The Midwest Deaths Register will eventually include records for anyone who has died and has no formal burial location or with no official final ceremony taking place. Some have died under adverse conditions, for example, those lost at sea, lost in the harsh interior or those taken under suspicious circumstances and their remains were unrecoverable. The database is constantly being updated.
The Midwest Convict Register includes the details of approximately 2500 men and occasionally their families, who arrived in this district at differing stages of their prison sentences. Some arrived as Probationer Prisoners and were located at the Geraldton Convict Hiring Depot or as members of road parties living in tents, some as Ticket of Leave men (parolees) and others who had almost completed their original sentences and were granted more freedom to move from district to district.
The Midwest Death Register is a searchable database of burials in the Mid West of Western Australia Cemeteries and more recently cremations, from the earliest known record of 1857 to 2018 and although it is not complete, research and data entry is ongoing.
